Yeah, the 'crash box' whines a little in 1st, at least mine always have.

Could be your pressure relief valve is cranked down a little tight, or else
your oil is too thick.

IMO that's an unlikely place for a leak.  Still, anything's possible.

What are you using for dashpot oil ?  A bog when you open the throttle is
usually a lean bog, this is exactly the condition the dashpots are designed
to prevent.
