Yes they can, I did this about 20+ years ago and used +.040 pistons. works out
to 87mm. Mine were bored in a lathe and then honed to fit. It's better to do
them in the block as it's much easier to hold them and less chance to distort
when chucked into a lathe.
So short answer is yes.
