I always started adjusting the boot lid.  One time tried to force
the lid when it was just too tight (the wife tried to pack one too many
things for a weekend trip).  The bar on the lid latch had bent. After
putting it in a vice, I was able to bend it back (didn't move much, but
enough to cause problems with proper latching) and it has worked fine
since.
