J-type Overdrive parts missing

Thanks to knowledgable friends who speculated on my
overdrive problem. The guy I bought it from  said it
always worked so I thought it was oil level or
electrical. I removed the sump and found that the
dashpot assembly is missing! I reaLIZE THERE MAYBE
OTHER FAULTS, but has anybody got one and have any idea
why it might have been removed?
