Paul Smock (a local club member not on the list) once told me of a novel
solution, he used manifold vacuum with a solenoid to shut it off at idle.
The solenoid was a common item on US cars in the 70's; my Dad's 73 Buick
Estate Wagon had one for example. Paul rigged a microswitch to the throttle
linkage to energize the solenoid (cutting off the vacuum) at idle.

ISTR Paul said his TR4's gas mileage improved by about 15% with the vacuum
advance. It was still much worse with the Webers than with the original
carbs.
