Graham,
The LeMans Spitfire head was indeed for the 1147 cc engine.  But it was
NOT cross flow.  Its unique property was that it is an 8 port head
rather than the 6 port (with siamesed intake ports) that were typical of
the production 1147's.

I think that they were made in both cast iron and aluminum.

P.S. If your friend really wants to design something, the cross flow
idea is a good one.  I would go with a cross flow head for the later
Spitfire engines (1300 and 1500) because they are much more plentiful.
