To clean my wire wheels, I remove them from the car, spray liberally with a
foaming wheel cleaner, rinse, dry and then get down to work. Mostly I'll use
some MaGuires cleaner wax with a small foam brush or 10 (they don't hold up
well), rag over a stick, or my fingers. The secret though is to keep
repeating "thank god I didn't get 72 spoke wheels, thnak god I didn't get 72
spoke wheels..."

BTW, I've been using a rawhide mallet since I got the car, doesn't seem to
have any adverse effects on the spinners - rawhide is pretty busted up
though.
