The idea is to strike the part that has the tapered hole on both sides
simultaneously. This slightly deforms that part and the tapered pin pops
out. No damage is done to any part. Hard to describe in words. Basically
you're striking the hole on opposite sides.I'm always able to get them
loose with four or five smacks. Here's what I do:
1. Loosen the nut so you can see if the tapered stud moves.
2. With a heavy hammer in each hand, place one hammer on the backside, to
serve as the backstop, so to speak
3. Smack the opposite side with the other hammer.
4. The tapered pin pops loose
I have a pickle fork too, but haven't used it for years after I was shown
this trick. The darned pickle fork often damaged one or both of the parts I
was trying to separate.
