I agree completely.  According to Piggott, painted wires were available in
either "silver" or "aluminium."  The dark-colored wheels to which you refer
look like aircraft aluminum in color, which to my eyes is much more pleasing
than the silver.  In fact, I prefer wire wheels painted in that dark
aluminum color to chromed wheels, which are just a little too "pimp" for my
tastes!
