In addition to comments about hauling big (well sorta big) things back
there, the space under the occasional seat is out of sight and useful
for items that you want hidden for what ever reason. I put a couple of
speaker under there (the kind enclosed in a wedge-shaped plastic
housing) also have the fire extiguisher down there -- easy to reach but
not easy to see from outside the car.
