I've started ( using a starter motor ) engines with just a automatic 
transmission flex plate attached.  A flex plate is just a sheetmetal disc with 
a ring 
gear attached.  The motor is very eratic at idle but picks up revs right now.

Hand cranking without a flywheel would be very dangerous, with little 
rotating weight a cylinder can fire and rotate the engine backwards.  ( spark 
is 
advanced even at cranking speed )
