The issue isn't so much getting a preson up there as it is getting stuff up
there.

The opening needs to be large enough to clear a hood, trunk or door.
Carrying the stuff up a ladder will be difficult at best. When faced with a
similar
situation in the past, pulling the stuff up with a rope ( after the ladder has
been removed ) is the most workable solution. A pulley system works wonders
too.

Is any of the garage below ground or near a hill? External access might be a
better solution.

How about this for a alternate solution. Run some steps along a wall from
the ceiling down to the 6 ft level at the 6 ft level there will be a landing.
This landing will be accessed be a removable ladder. The area beneath the
steps will be occupied by storage closets.

A second opening in the center of the garage will be the parts hatch.
