There was a factory procedure where you can slide a long screwdriver through 
one of the grommets, along side the wire harness, and engage the release 
directly.  I don't recall exactly but you may have to remove the glove box.

Brace yourself for a barrage of mail about installing a back-up release.  If 
you get a new release, get two and install them both.  I shortened one and 
mounted handle in the passenger footwell and now I can open the hood from 
either 
side.
