List,

I need some advice. I don't have the time or the skill to do some of the
work on my car, so I outsource to local mechanics. So far, though, I have
found it impossible to find anyone who takes the same care that I would and
who treats the care as I would like them to. I have tried so called British
Car specialists, including some who own Triumphs, and several other
mechanics. My latest problem was a rattling clutch, which I thought was a
release bearing, but turned out to be a damaged collar as well. I stripped
the inside of the car, knowing that that would not get done with care by a
mechanic, and presented it to him to work on. He replaced the clutch plate
and the pressure plate while he was in there, and the car is now back in my
garage.

The problem is that the effective clutch pedal is less than it was, and it
doesn't seem to release the clutch properly - the gears grind when you try
to select them. The release arm is attached in the central hole, as my book
says it should be, so what could be wrong? I can bleed the hydraulics, but
surely he wouldn't have needed to touch those?

Any advice would be much appreciated. I'd like to fix it myself rather than
go back to the mechanic with it.
