Bob,

THe new rubber fittings are made that way, just about 1/2 " to large.

The idea is you have to clamp the fitting to do the install.

I used a simple adjustable clamp and it only took a few turns to line up the 
bolt holes.

THe idea here is when you release the clamp, the extra tension will make a 
better fit.
