Tain't so. Another urban legend, I guess. The guy was probably worried
about trash in the tires ruining his blades, as you surmised. But there is
not reason why a used tire can't be shaved.
They do it all the time at retreading shops. And I have had "used" tires
shaved several times for various reasons, no problem.
