This, as others have said, it probably just a nasty connector. However, a few years ago, a lamp manufacturer made a string of lights that had a secondary filiment that glowed when the main lamp blew.

I would vote that you look first for bad bearings or seals in the water pump -- bearings or seals that react differently when hot and when accelerating and therefore adding additional lateral stress
