I have just opened my gearbox, photos are here: http://tinyurl.com/m96txy The only problem I had was that the reverse jumped out of gear. Otherwise all was fine. When I opened it, it seems that the:

A couple more bolts and you've got it apart. Go for it. New syncros, reverse gear, needle bearings, thrust washers, laygear repair( if needed), layshaft, gaskets, a good bath etc. and you should have

The reverse gear is not a pretty sight, but considering that it is not in use for 99,99% of the time it is OK to leave it if you cannot find a replacement. First gear seems to look allright, but the
