I have one SU book that says to close the slow run valves and adjust the idle with the throttle stops only, and one that says, essentially, that 'the idle must be set only with the slow run valves.'

Sounds to me like your car needs a complete tune up. Valves then points then timing then mixture/balance and once all of that is done is when you start fiddling with the slow idle adjustment. Alan -
