Hi all The other day I went to start James (too old to be called jimmy) and crank as much as I would, no start. Not even a pop. All I got for my trouble was the smell of raw fuel. When I got to invest

Hi Perry, Get a new resistor, it is probably "open", no continuity. You can check it with a ohm meter to be sure but these are the classic symptoms of a open ballast resistor. The bypass is to allow

Hi all Thanks for the responses, in reply to the question of replacing the resistor, yes, twice. What I have been able to determine since my last post is that the by-pass wire that I installed is all

Make sure the diode is beefy enough. You are going to be pulling ~ 6 Amps through it when the points are closed and there is going to be a really ugly spike when the points first open and the field s

Sounds like all you have is a bad ballast resistor. The way all that works, when the key is in "Start" there should be power to both the resistor and the bypass, allowing the coil to see 12 volts. T

Yes, actually when GM came out with the HEI distributor in 1974/1975 they eliminated the ballast resistor to provide the HEI with the full 12 volts needed. Wally oletrucks is devoted to Chevy and GM

if you do not have hei ignition you need the ballast resister so you do not burn up your coil(speaking from experience here) bill 53-3600 hot rod --Original Message-- From: Ivana Tinkle <monadnoc@cry
