The point was that the factory actually WAS pulling cars out of the line and/or the line to do mods, sometimes pretty radical....astounding to me for exactly the reasons you state...since it disrupts

the side mounted spare was a dealer option as was the heater in southern areas. i heard this from a freind that started as a chevrolet mechanic in 57. kurt 58 3100 w/side mounted spare ______________
