Very old water pumps such as the originals may need light greasing. Any water pump that has been built or rebuilt in the last 20 - 30 years will have lubed, sealed, bearings which require no greasing

Is there a way to tell, wether it is a rebuilt one without taking it apart? I bought my Healey some years ago, forgot about greasing the water pump and getting hot might be caused by the water pump n

The original water pumps had a fitting with a "flip up" cap on the housing for greasing. The later, sealed-bearing type have the casting boss for the fitting, but no fitting. If your water pump seal

Interesting, my BN1 has a zirc or grease fitting, no cap but has a provision for oiling, I use the same grease in a tube that I use on the suspension and other points with grease fittings. Greg Lemon

My BJ8 came with the cap-type fitting ... I bought a tub of "water pump grease" to stuff in there, then the pump blew and I replaced with later, sealed-bearing type. Somebody might have put the zirc
