I drove mine like that for years but finally got tired of the roar. I found the sound to not be like the "Healey" sound rather a harsh sound with a lot of "popping" esp when letting off the gas going

The bigger the exhaust with the least amount of resistance is better. Any counter-pressure you can remove from the exhaust system will allow the engine to breath better, especially at higher RPMs. I

You won't hurt the engine. You may want to put an earlier style muffler on that will do the whole job that the two sets were doing before.

One thing that has been a massive help for me on the BJ8 has been replacing the rear springs. Ever since I've done that, I may have bonked the exhaust system slightly ... once maybe twice in 10 years
