I had this same problem. There is no "further back into the console". The smallest of radio tape decks just squeeze in. I actually had to saw off the grounding bolt that stuck out of the back of the

What I did was mount a DIN stereo into the sqaure opening,not only is it flat so that the shafts are no problem,you can also get a removable face to lessen the chance of theft.My two,Adios,toyman Isn
