The trick is to disconnect or short the coil so you don't get a spark, and then to spin the engine on the starter till you get oil pressure. Hope you did not damage the engine. Dirk

That's how I ALWAYS start up my MGB, i.e. - first, just cranking, until the oil pressure builds up, - only then, use the choke control to enable the engine to start. Bert
