I have recently obtained a Rootes overdrive gearbox whose origins I can't identify. It is a later, full synchro box, with a casting number 71981060 (my late Alpine boxes all have the same number with

Hi John, it sounds like what you have is a gearbox from the later fast back Alpine and Rapier. The ribs on the spacer indicate this. You will probably find that the input shaft is longer than the one

These ratios are hiddious, you sure they are correct? I can see that some rootes cars might have a wider ratio than our beloved alpines, but these ratios seem unusably wide. Jarrid Gross

These ratios are the same as my 1963 commer camper van, and are unfortunately quite neccessary when hauling along its standard weight of 4000 lb. These vans were made up until the early 70s and marke

Jarrid, Greg, et al......... In the late 70's I autocrossed an Alpine in FS class. My secret weapon was a gear box out of a Hillman Husky. I found the car in a local bone yard and had the transmissio

Thanks for the many replies on this subject. The Commer van solution seems to fit what I have the best. It is obvious that there is a large range of gearbox ratios available to fit this box. I will c

Sorry, no digital camera. OD Gearbox itself is identical to non-od gearboxes. Only difference is the mainshaft. Early vs late gearboxes differ on the tail assembly in that the later boxes have an add

What is the difference between the early and late overdrive adapters ("doughnut spacers")? You said there is an additional oil passageway. I have seen many units with an outboard copper tube plumbed

The overdrive adapters are about 4 inch extensions of where the tailcase would have been mounted on standard transmisions. Early and late look almost identical, except that late ones have a 3/8 or so

Hi Jarrid, the later over drives had the balance tube cast into the tailhousing, you can see it as a ridge running from back to front. The one on EBay is this later type and is for series 5 but will
