O.K. who's going to explain the inner workings of the distributor/coil/resistor/points/condenser relationship in laymen terms for all of us dummies. After talking to the parts/tech person where I bou

Thanks Frank. The coil is new and the connectors are tight. Just wanted to verify that "+" was the Contact Breaker side on a positive ground car. When I installed the coil I unthinkingly followed the

I can only help with your last question. I'm guessing your resistor is there for the same reason mine is: the car's resistance wire failed/burned up/shorted out/etc...... We had a thread on the MGs

Whoops, I feel like I am coming into this in the middle. BUT... Some Midgets (like mine) had both types of resistors. The ballast resistor is the usual hidden-in-the-harness type. There is also a cer

I think you're mistaken about the year they changed to an external resistor. My '71 and '74 have resistance wire, so I don't think it was '69. I suspect it may have been in '75 when the rubber bumpe

The coil is the external resistor type and the resistor/ballast that came with the coil is a ceramic block and is wired between the coil and distributor. I discovered last night that the coil is wir

Should be fine, then - just double check that the infamous resistor wire isn't hidden in the wiring harness. Then you'd have double resistance, etc. This made me remember that my MGB (a 1979 LE) has

Well, not quite true. Early cars used coils with a different turns ratio. When the ballast concept was developed/stolen, the turns ratio was changed in the coil to make it work. It's not really an "i
