Yes, but not well. Eventually chews up both the starter pinion & the ring gear. The other way round (late starter with early flywheel) should bind, but some people have gotten away with this combina

Not sure which car you're talking about, but it's my understanding that the TR250 had a pull type starter with the gear bevels towards the rear. The TR6 changed (not sure when) to a push type starter

The shape of the starter pinion gear does matter. And it's great timing, since today I pulled my transmission and can give you a good illustration. A couple years ago a nearly new starter came apart
