There is a "dirt guard" pressed steel ring that is on the yoke that goes on the front of the pinion gear as it goes into the diferential. It hides the lip seal from view. If it is loose and flopping,

Paul, Are you talking about the original rear seal? It has a shield like you say. You should have removed it and replaced it with a different seal like Bill says in the instructions. Going to be hard
