Not really. Valves too tight means the exhaust valves will quickly burn up (if you can get the engine to run at all), too loose means there's nothing in the cylinder to fire. Either you mis-read the

Thanks Randall... This is what I'd always pretty much assumed. camshaft tappet is I'm probably mis-reading it. But I guess the point is that you want the tappet somewhere on the backside of the cam

The cam rotates 1/2 turn for every full turn of the crankshaft. Aha! The rotor arm should point at the no. 1 spark plug's tower on the distributor cap, not at the spark plug itself! -- Douglas Frank

That's partly true, but on a TR2-4 engine, the correct (rough) distributor alignment is with the #1 plug contact on a line between the shaft and the #1 (exhaust) push rod tube on the head. I believe
