in the process of doing the head is there a way of getting the nut that holds the temp gauge off without cutting it .also there is a lot of black carbon i guess on the top of the pistons is that bad

I certainly don't recommend cutting it off. First, get some PB Blaster and soak it for a day or two. Then either get a brake line wrench the right size or modifiy one of your box end wrenches by cutt

You definitely don't want to cut this off because it will cost you well over $100 to rebuild your temp guage, if you can even find someone who can do it properly. What you want to do is go buy a 5/8

Sure, buy a cheap 5/8 deep socket and cut a slot up the side so the capilary tube can stick out the side and away you go. They make oxygen sensor sockets that way and I don't know if there's a 5/8 or
