As you suggest, Lee, it will firm up when the sheeting goes on the rafters. Couple of points your dad might consider. Put diagonal braces (say 4x2) from the top of the outside posts to the bottom of

Now on Nope. The wobble is in the posts. You need to triangulate the sides. I suggest he sheath part of the sides. To keep the sun off, I'd expect enclosing part of the sunward walls would help. Phi

I have built two "shed roof" carports using 4 x 4s for supports. I also used 6 posts per bay. The first one was a 3 bay, the second one was a 4 bay. On the second one I put each post at least 3 to 4
