I have decided to renew the u/v joints on my 1972 mark 4 Spit, the vibration as I lift off the throttle at around 50 mph is getting pretty uncomfortable ( seems worse with the hood up). Is there any

It is the main prop shaft under the chassis that I am renewing to try and reduce the vibration. Thanks again,

Iain, the latter part of the write up of the actual replacement of the joint is the same. In fact the joints themselves are the same. It is a bit easier for the propshaft as you mark the two flanges

It has to do with balance. Drive shafts are balanced after manufacture, regular car manufactures do it but not to a high end. If you put it in different there is a good chance you would have a vibrat

Here's my thoughts: Original or rebalanced shafts are balanced off the car. Flanges are symmetrical. If the shaft is balanced it should not matter on which bolt holes align given the two previous sta

Hi All, I managed to get the shaft off last night with plenty of huffing and puffing. When I examined it I found that the front U/J was a bit stiff in one direction. Could this be the cause of the vi

I guess it's possible that the stiff UJ is the problem, but it doesn't seem that likely to me. The propshaft is pretty well aligned with the gearbox and diff in a Spit, and (unlike cars with a live

A long time ago I had a Datsun, and its drive shaft started vibrating. When I removed it, I found that the little needles in one joint had actually started crumbling. So I doubt that a "bit" of stiff

Actually, too-perfect alignment is bad for the joints, since the needles never get to move, and the load it always taken on the exact same locations. Driveshafts are normally designed with slight ang
