I had this same problem on a '74 TR6. The DPO had rebuilt the carbs and tried to bypass some of the emission control. What he actually did was plug off the bowl vents on both carbs. I behaved EXACTLY

Before you go nuts, I'd be inclined to check 3 things. 1.) The coil. An old coil will often behave like you described when it fails. It's fine when cold, but starts cutting out when it gets hot. 2.)
