Regarding valve adjustment: just loosen the plugs, put rachet/socket on the alternator nut, sit on the left tire and turn the alternator as needed, if the belt slips just put your finger on the belt

I can quote Ted Schumachers' rule of 9 -- roll the car forward until number 1 valve is fully depressed, then adjust its counterpart, which is valve number 8. The total of the valves you are adjusting

Great way to do it, but I have trouble with number 4.5; when it is fully depressed, I can't get any clearance. When I have clearance, it's not depressed. :) Donald. (playing in the surreal again?)

Both the Haynes and the Workshop manual list an order in which to do the adjustments (which I can't remember off the top of my head...) But the only reason why you should do them in this order is to

Ok guys I have a question. Everyone said to adjust the valves to .010, but Ted Schmucher said not to do this, he said .012. I did them to that and it is very noisy. Is there any reason for this Ted.

mike, it is cheaper to listen to valves than to have themn burn. we always did this at our dealership and still do on any cars today. if they are "really" noisy, go back through and recheck clearance
