Actually, lead-acid batteries will last longer if kept fully charged. They do not exhibit a "memory" characteristic typical of the nickel-cadmium style batteries so there is no reason to "cycle" them

You can shine a light into the gear box and try to see if any gears are chipped but in the end you need to pull it apart and look for problems with bearings as well as the gears on the layshaft. JVV
