Welding is pretty extreme and will ensure tons'o'fun next time you have to
disassemble the front of the gearbox. Not recommended IMO. Look at

elegant suggestions.

As for having a different pin made up, Brian Schlorff at Power British in
Pennsylvania (USA) has info on this -- you might give him a call
<http://www.powerbritish.com/~britcars>. ASAIK he doesn't read this list but
sometimes reads the triumphs list.
