If the OD had stuck on in the past and was engaged all the time, and
you engaged reverse with the OD on, you've got problems. I've heard
that this will crack the casing of the gearbox or OD unit, or both. If
this is what happened, I'm surprised your gearbox is working at all. I
got a remanufactured OD unit from TRF a few years back, and after a few
hours of driving, I noticed overdrive didn't seem to disengage when I
flicked the switch. I was sure not to engage reverse gear until I
checked the problem out thoroughly. Turned out the solenoid got stuck
and therefore wouldn't allow the overdrive unit to disengage.
Unfortunately, it's time to pull the gearbox out and take a closer
look. I'd say the box and OD unit will at the very least require a
rebuild, but if you cracked the casing you're going to need to locate
another one. Not hard to find a casing for the gbox (just pick up a
used TR6 gbox from a local Triumph parts guy or check Hemming Motor
News), but it will be very difficult to find one for the OD unit if
that one is busted too.
