Geoff,

I've got 4500 miles on my total rebuild and had the same concerns as you,
starting at 2000. I was told by 2 mechanics that they've experienced rebuilt
some engines taking over 7000 miles for the consumption to settle down. I
still burn oil, about a half quart in 400 miles but it's increasing.

I've experienced different rates of oil consumption with different oils, too.
When I was pouring in a quart every few days, I kept the crankcase filled with
Amoco Gold 20W50, an inexpensive oil I got from the local discount warehouse.
Oil consumption never slowed down. Upon advise of a mechanic, I've switched to
Kendall 20W50, a racing oil. The mechanic stated he uses it for his rebuilds
and thinks that the issue may be due the amount of additives in the Amoco vice
the little or no additives in the Kendall. In my case, the oil consumption is
diminishing.
