When I looked at my new "seal" I too had the question how does it go. Then
I looked harder and asked what does it seal to/from. Mine just sits there
an inch from any part of the hood. Am I missing something?

I have a '75 TR6. You do not have to remove the hood to install the
rubber seal. It's easy. The hardest part is deciding which way you want
it to face. You'll see what I mean when you go to install it. I really
don't think it makes any difference.
