Minimally, the car has a front or rear seal that is hardened and needs
replacing. If it's the rear seal, you can get to it from underneath by
dropping the drive shaft and using a seal puller to remove it, not too big a
deal. At the worst, you have multiple problems and need to pull the
transmission and get both seals replaced. If you pull the tranny yourself,
you're looking at two hours labor with a helper and about a hundred dollars to
have someone else replace the seals. If it hasn't been done recently, I would
get the tranny rebuilt for about $800 after you pull it assuming you need a
$230 lay gear. With your purchase, worry about rust. Mechanical issues can be
solved easily, rust creates its own much more expensive and time consuming
problems. Hope this helps with your negotiations.
