        Don:

Check the oil level in your dashpots, and if that is ok,
yank the top off your carbs, and check the vacuum diaphragms
for tears and pinholes (stretch them slightly to look for holes).

        That's my SWAG.

Subject: New engine with a "hitch"

Hi all,
I am very frustrated with a problem that has developed with my '69 TR6. I
have a "hitch" or misfire or rough running at, and about, 2,000 RPM under
load. The car starts fine and above this RPM has plenty of power and is
smooth, but most around the back roads running is in this range.

Here are the facts:
Brand new engine rebuild with 1,000 miles on it - the first 800 I didn't
have the "hitch."
New spark plugs - 12YC vs. 9YC (though 9YC didn't make any difference
either)
New points and condenser.
Timing set at 4 degrees BTDC, but varied to 4 degrees ATDC with no change in
"problem."
I reused my coil and plug wires.
Carbs will be rebuilt this "wintah" (I'm in Maine).
Car is running rich but I have the very early nonadjustable mixture
Stromberg carbs - I am considering buying some used carbs that are
adjustable and rebuilding them for replacement (any thoughts on this
approach?)
High Test gas, fresh oil change.

The only thing that I did recently was replace the large vacuum line that
goes to the brake booster - the old one was "pinched" of and soft. I don't
think I have any other vacuum problems, but am willing to try things.

I read somewhere where someone suggested disconnecting the vacuum advance to
the distributor and setting the timing a different way. Was this a "fix"
that I might want to try. If this works, what does it indicate? - problem
with distributor/vacuum advance?

Where do I go from here - change to a hotter coil, ad an aftermarket spark
booster (MSD unit), eliminate points with electronic gismo in distributor,
change timing adjustment, carbs, .....?

There's got to be a simple solution here.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
