Hi Scot,

Sorry to hear about your continuing alternator problems.  The negative 
battery cable on my '71 has an extra connection in the middle.  The ends of 
the cable connect the negative battery terminal to a bolt on the 
engine/tranny (as I recall).  The middle connection is for a bolt that 
connects to the body just under the battery box.

When I purchased my well (ab)used car it had an aftermarket battery cable 
and didn't ground the body.
The car had so many other problems at that time that I can't say how much 
it helped to get the proper body ground.

BTW, there's also a small ground wire that connects to the fill plug on the 
steering rack.  That one often breaks with age or gets neglected when 
servicing the rack.
