The rough stuff on the bottom of TR6 sills (rockers?) is what used to be known
as underseal. It was a bitumen based compound applied (sprayed) at the factory
during vehicle assembly. It was in general use in the UK (mostly by dealers)
between the late 40's and mid-eighties to protect painted surfaces from stone
chipping and later rust from water and salt. This was a process applied to the
car at the customer's behest. Manufacturers rarely used it, except for colour
contrasting as in TR. As this relates to the production use on TR5/250 and 6,
it depends on model year, whether the bitumen was either left black or painted
to match body colour.

As an aside, I am greatly saddened to see so much venom and terse subject
headings being exchanged between the list moderator and certain contributors
on the issue of 'advertising.' Perhaps we can now move forward (or possibly
even return?) to a correspondence environment where mutual courtesy is
conspicuous by its prominence - or is that asking too much?
