In addition to the previous suggestions, if you feel hesitant about crawling
under the car and undoing bolts, you might consider trying to remove it out
the top way.
Once you have the canister in your hand and empty of oil, turn it so that it
will just pass between the block and the steering column while pulling the
steering column away from the block. Use your other hand to pull the column
away from the block. Don't worry about harming the column with your own
force, that's very unlikely. You should be able to get the canister out this
way.
I second the suggestion to carefully fish out all remnants of the old
o-ring. Check if there is more than one in there. A small dentist's type
pick works very well for this and use a good light. You want to mount the
adapter using its own o-ring against the block to ensure the best seal.
Also, don't over torque the bolt which holds the adapter to the block. The
cast iron threads have been known to strip occasionally, that would be a
real pain to repair!
