Mark,

My first response when people type in about overheating is to encourage them to 
buy a cheap meat thermomometer and when the coolant is cold, remove the 
radiator cap and check out what the actual temperature of the coolant is.  
Turns out that my engine wasnt overheating, but the voltage regulator was bad.  
If yours is bad the gas guage will read on the high side also.
