I don't want to sound "preachy", but...
I've worn many tires with my dolly over the years, I like it because it is
light and doesn't have to be licensed. It's a pain to back up, and you have
to make the towed car a roller in the rear, but it is easy to use and pulls
nicely only weighing 400 pounds or so. I admit I have not towed anything
backwards, but Fred, who should make "Don't Do This" films for shop
classes did.
The last time I loaned out my dolly, I showed my buddy "Fred" the towing
backwards warning tag. Fred is one of the best friends you could ever
have, but Fred is not allowed to drive my cars, not even with me in them.
Fred is death to equipment of every kind. So I loan him my dolly and he
swears to not tow backwards. We all know what happened, don't we?
The positive side is: it only took me three hours to make the repairs on
the fenders and and their 1-1/4 inch square tubing mounts. Luckily, it's a
stout little dolly and is still square, but it does have a few more scars
form the ordeal.
The lock on any steering column, or ties of any kind, could never be
trusted to be strong enough to risk our life or limb, or to not endanger
the unsuspecting people sharing the highway with us. If a tire blew out and
the front started whipping with the weight of the motor over the front
wheels... good luck! Hope you have vinyl seats. Depending on the states
you are traveling through, there may be laws against it.
IMHO, I would jack it up, examine and spin the tires, disconnect the
driveshaft, top off the diff. with synthetic for cooling, grab the
halfshafts and swing like an ape, no major noises? I'm hitting the road with
no more to talk about than the traveling weather. I go a short ways and
stop to feel the tire sidewalls and hubs looking for signs of heat, then
whenever I stop for gas or whatever.
With my tow rig, the ever beautiful and rust-free IH Scout, I can't see
my TR6 in the mirrors until going through a dip or by watching the antenna.
