In order to put this whole thing to rest, I looked at the schematic
for "early" cars. Power for the boot lamp is from the same line as
used for the tunnel courtesy lamp and the glove box lamp, ergo the
boot lamp should come on at any time.
That still doesn't explain why mine doesn't work at all.
