On at least three of the cars I have worked on the ring gear had been pushed
almost off the flywheel by the starter repeatedly hitting it. Don't
overlook the possibility that the ring gear may need to be pulled back into
place on the flywheel. This can be done with a big C clamp through the
starter hole.
