No, it's not straight forward. I was going to use the early type on Brian
Shilt's Series V and I don't exactly remember what the problem was, but it
didn't work as a direct replacement. I was pretty rushed to get his car
finished and used a NOS cable type that I had in stock. I really didn't spend
much time on the problem and why it wouldn't fit though.

Is the early Alpine rod type hood release a direct replacement for the cable
style (Series V) hood release? Has anyone done this swap? Do you have to
